“Airbus” Tariff Could Hit EU Stone and Quartz
WASHINGTON -- New tariffs could effectively double the base price of quartz surfaces and a large amount of natural-stone shipments from European Union (EU) members later this year.
The proposed imports duties on granite, travertine and unclassified “other” stone, along with quartz surfaces, stem from an October 2004 complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) by the United States concerning subsidies of European aircraft manufacturer Airbus Industrie.
Marble and other calcareous stone are not included in the long list of “countermeasure” products subject to a possible tariff of up to 100%. The tariffs would hit hardest on Spain and Italian stone/quartz exports.
